The First Step to Building A Successful Choral Program
The biggest mistake choral directors make is not having clarity about what they want and, consequently, what they expect from their students.

Effective choral direction goes beyond teaching vocal technique, music literacy, and selecting repertoire. These elements are crucial, but they should not take precedence over establishing a clear vision and foundation for your choral program. Before diving into the technical and musical aspects, it’s essential to define your goals and expectations in broader terms.

The first step to building a successful choral program is asking yourself about the following fundamental things:

  1. Rehearsal Beginnings: How do you want each rehearsal to start? The way rehearsals commence sets the tone for the entire session. Consider the atmosphere you wish to create as students enter the room. Your positioning and initial interactions can greatly influence their mindset and readiness to engage.
  2. Student Engagement: What level of engagement do you expect from your students during rehearsals? Engagement isn’t just about singing; it encompasses active participation, focused listening, and collaborative effort. Clearly communicating your expectations helps students understand what is required of them beyond vocal performance.
  3. Musical Retention: How much retention of material do you expect between rehearsals?  Consistent progress requires students to retain and build upon what they learn. This begins by thinking about the level of focus they exhibit in the rehearsal. Setting expectations for individual practice and review can enhance musical growth and cohesion within the ensemble.
  4. Atmosphere and Culture: What kind of atmosphere and culture do you want to foster within your choir? Beyond technical skills, a positive and supportive environment encourages creativity, risk-taking, and personal growth. Define the values and behaviors that contribute to a cohesive and uplifting choral community.
  5. Your Role: What role do you play in the classroom and in the lives of your students? As a choral director, your influence extends beyond musical instruction. You are a mentor, motivator, and role model. Clarifying your role helps establish rapport and trust, essential for effective teaching and learning.

Notice how these questions prioritize the holistic development of your choral program. They provide a framework for creating a cohesive vision that aligns with your goals and values as a director.

Creating a clear vision requires envisioning your ideal choral rehearsal. Imagine the scene: students entering calmly, greeting you or their peers with respect, and settling into their positions with focused anticipation. Your presence and demeanor set the stage for what follows. As you begin, students respond attentively, embodying the posture and body language conducive to quality vocal performance. They handle their music thoughtfully, transition smoothly between activities, and interact positively with each other, fostering a supportive and collaborative atmosphere.

Before you can build this vision into reality, you must first articulate what you want from your classroom environment. This exercise isn’t about right or wrong preferences; it’s about defining the environment that best supports your teaching style and the needs of your students. Your vision should reflect your values, priorities, and aspirations for both musical and personal growth.

Once your vision is clear, you can begin laying a solid foundation. This foundation includes establishing routines, setting expectations for behavior and performance standards, and nurturing a sense of community and belonging among your students. Consistency in your approach reinforces expectations and helps students understand their roles and responsibilities within the ensemble.

When mentoring choir directors, I emphasize the importance of starting with vision clarity. Together, we identify their goals and values, which form the basis for developing a strategic plan. This plan integrates musical objectives with broader educational and personal development goals, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching choral experience.
